BBB: Dragons fall to Rebels
January 25, 2014By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High School
In a foul-plagued game, the New Palestine Dragons dropped a 72-57 decision to Roncalli at home Friday night.
The Dragons led once -- at 13-12 -- but Roncalli went on a 10-point run and never trailed, leading 37-26 at halftime and by as much as 18 -- at 48-30 -- in the third quarter. A rally led by Kevin Riley and Ryan Curry helped cut the deficit to 57-50, but Roncalli's Jimmy Kinganswered it with nine points early in the fourth quarter to help stave off the Dragon rally.
King finished the night with 26 points to lead the Rebels, hitting 7-of-12 from the field. Roncalli shot 45 percent from the floor (22-48), while the Dragons shot 33 percent (19-57). Roncalli did much of its damage at the free throw line -- the Rebels shot 21 first-half free throws and finished 23-of-36 for the game. The Dragons were 15-of-21 in a game that featured 50 fouls called.
As a result, the Dragons had to battle foul trouble much of the night.
Riley scored all of his career-high 14 points in the second half, hitting 4-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line. Samson Haynes had a career-high 11 points, and led the team with three assists. He also had five rebounds from the guard position. Curry had 10 points, his eighth double-figure game of the year, and also had two assists, two blocks and a team-high eight rebounds. Connor Roach had eight points and three boards. Brandon Jonas and Seth Cox had six points on 3-4 shooting each. They combined for 11 rebounds. Duke Blackwell also had two points and four boards.
The Dragons are now 6-4 on the year. They next are in action Tuesday at New Castle, with the JV game tipping at 6 p.m. Varsity game will tip at 7:30 p.m.
