GBB: Defensive Dragons down Warriors

New Palestine used its defense to pull away to a 41-27 victory over the Whiteland Warriors Saturday afternoon.
The Dragons held Whiteland without a field goal for the game's first 9:40, and the only field goal the Warriors made in the game's final nine minutes was a breakaway layup. NP held Whiteland to two points in each the first and fourth quarters.
Emma Laughlin tallied a career-high 13 points to lead the Dragons. She also had three assists and three steals. Raegan McMurray had a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with four points, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
The Dragons never trailed, but the lead got as close as three with 1:20 left in the third quarter after six straight Whiteland points. Haley Stratman opened the fourth with a 3-pointer. Haley Gehring followed with a steal and a layup to put the Dragons up eight, while Laughlin and McMurray followed with hoops and Stratman a 3-pointer in a 13-2 fourth quarter. Whiteland was 1-for-10 from the floor in the final eight minutes, while the Dragons were 5-for-11.
Stratman scored all seven of her points in the final quarter. She also had seven boards, helping the Dragons outrebound Whiteland 38-24. Natalie Kehrt also had seven points to go along with two rebounds. Gia Nitschke scored six points and grabbed six rebounds. Katlyn Keele had two points and five boards.
The Dragons are now 7-8 on the year, and have won three of their last four games. They host Beech Grove Tuesday, with the JV game to tip at 6 p.m.
Whiteland won the JV game.
