January 15, 2014By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High School
The New Palestine Dragons returned from break and swam "off" events against Greenfield-Central, their final meet before the HHC meet on Saturday.
The girls fell 113-73 to G-C. The boys fell 142-41.
Winners for the Dragon girls were Addison Virt in the 50 freestyle, Erin Trimpe in the 100 freestyle, Shannon Jones in diving, the 200 medley relay of Grace Hornsby, Trimpe, Virt and Rachel Wineman, and the 200 free relay of Trimpe, Virt, Wineman and Jones.
Runners-up for the Dragon girls were Claire Hornsby in the 200 freestyle, Virt in the 100 freestyle and the 400 free relay of Kenzie Wells, Claire Hornsby, Trimpe and Wineman.
For the Dragon boys, Grant Gish was second in the 50 free and 100 backstroke.
"This was a make-up meet from last week's weather postponement, and being days out from the conference championship, the swimmers had a chance to swim some non-primary events," NP coach Steve Maxwell said. "There were several strong swims in these 'off events' and, having only had a handful of practices since the new year, the swimmers were able to enter their races without normal expectations."
The Dragons will host the HHC meet this weekend, which commences with the diving prelims on Thursday, and the swimming events on Saturday afternoon at the NPHS natatorium.
