BBB: Dragons place 3 in double-figures, but fall to CG

The Dragons placed three players in double-figures, but dropped a 71-54 decision to Center Grove in the season opener Friday.
The game was a back-and-forth contest early, with seven lead changes in the opening 12 minutes, but CG's one-two punch of Michael Benkert and Tyler Bryant helped the Trojans pull away. Bryant scored 33 points -- including 17 of the Trojans' 19 in the second quarter, as CG built a 39-33 halftime lead. Benkert scored 14 of his 25 points in the third quarter, as he had a double-double, adding 12 boards.
The Dragons placed three players in double-figures. Junior forward Brandon Jonas helped the Dragons off to their strong start with nine of his team-high 11 points in the opening half. He was 3-5 from the floor and 5-6 from the line. Connor Roach hit an early 3-pointer and shot 4-of-6 from the floor to score 10 points. He also had four boards, tying for team honors. Center Seth Cox had 10 points.
Point guard Samson Haynes had a strong all-around game, with six points, two assists, four rebounds and four steals. Kevin Riley also had seven points and four boards off the bench. Ryan Curry had six points, and Duke Blackwell added four.
The Dragons shot 41 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the line in the game.
New Palestine (0-1) next plays Saturday at Rushville. The game will be broadcast by HancockCountySports.com.
