Dragon girls soccer wins sectional championship

The New Palestine girls soccer team beat Greenfield-Central 4-1 Saturday night to clinch the Class 2A Greenfield-Central sectional title.
The teams went into halftime tied at 1-1, with Madison Carpenter scoring off Danielle Matus' corner kick to give the Dragons a lead in the opening minutes, and Abbey Schulz answering for G-C.
In the final 15 minutes, the Dragons broke the tie and got the victory. Amy Hilton scored the eventual game-winner, taking a feed from Madison Parish at the top of the box and drillng a hard, low shot into the net. Courtney Smith score on a free kick moments later, and then Parish scored on an assist from Katie Villiger.
"I am beyond proud of how far these girls have come from the beginning of the season," NP coach Gina Fannin said. "Every single player has contributed to this team in an important way. And they are all deserving of this sectional championship."
Gabbi Pierson made six saves to earn the victory in goal.
The sectional championship is the Dragons' 10th -- and the seventh in the last eight years.
The Dragons are now 9-7-2, and extended their unbeaten streak to eight games.
The Dragons will compete in regional play Wednesday at Shelbyville against Center Grove.
