Dragons defeat Delta 41-14
September 13, 2013New Palestine High School
4A No. 6 New Palestine ran past 3A No. 4 Delta 41-14 Friday at Delta.
Once again, the Dragons hit their stride in the middle quarters, and the Blake Luker-to-Tyler Walden connection was a big part of it, as well as a powerful running game and the Red Rage defense providing its share of the help.
New Palestine has scored at least 40 points in all four of its games -- all wins -- this season. They've given up 33 total in those games. Delta's 14 points were the most by an opponent, but the Eagles scored just the second touchdown that had been tallied against NPs Red Rage varsity defense all season.
The Dragons led 7-0 after a quarter on James Young's TD run, but surrendered the lead when Delta blocked a punt and ran it into the end zone to tie the game on the first play of the second quarter.
However, the Dragons were able to re-take the lead quickly. Moments after Delta's score, Luker broke a 55-yard TD run to make it 14-7, and then hooked up with Walden on a 17-yard TD pass in the final two minutes of the first half to give the Dragons a two-touchdown edge going into the break.
In the third quarter, shortly after the Dragons recovered a Delta fumble deep in NP territory, Luker and Walden hooked up on an 81-yard TD pass down the left sideline. It was the sixth touchdown the two had combined on this week, and gave Walden a third 100-yard receiving game in four contests. Leading 27-7, the Dragons kept pouring on, with Sterling Curran carrying most of another third-quarter TD drive and Luker scrambling for a fourth-quarter score that answered Delta's second TD.
At 2-0 in conference play, the Dragons share the HHC lead with Yorktown and Shelbyville. NP steps outside of league play next week to host Whiteland for its annual homecoming game. The Warriors are 3-1 and have scored at least 35 points in all three of their wins. The game will be broadcast by HancockCountySports.com.
