Wednesday NPHS wrapup: Several Dragon teams compete
September 11, 2013By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High School
The Dragons dropped a tough 25-13, 25-20, 25-21 match to Lutheran Wednesday evening.
Taylor Lawson led New Palestine with nine kills. Ellen Poetz had 15 assists.
"Lutheran played a tough match against us tonight. We struggled passing their serves and fell behind quickly," NP coach Kelli Whitaker said. "We made surges at the end of game 2 and 3 but didn't have enough to close in on them. Tonight our blocking learned a lot about tracking hitters. We will grow from this loss."
The Dragons, now 6-5, compete in the Greenwood Invitational Saturday morning.
Lutheran won the JV match 25-24, 25-18.
New Palestine split a match with Hamilton Southeastern and Westfield.
HSE shot 126 to win, New Palestine 142 and Westfield 150. The match was shortened to seven holes because high heat caused a late start.
The Dragons dropped a 3-1 decision on the road at Mt. Vernon Wednesday evening.
Natalie Kehrt scored for the Dragons.
New Palestine (1-7-1) next plays Sept. 18 at Greenfield-Central.
New Palestine won its eighth straight match with a 5-0 victory over Lawrence Central.
Brent Barrett, Connor Swain and Jake Purcell all won in straight sets at singles, as did Pete Rusche/David Thompson and Ben Farley/Shayan Khokhar at doubles.
The Dragons are now 10-2 on the year heading into Saturday's county tournament, which will be held at NPHS.
New Palestine won the MV match 3-1.
