August 26, 2013By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High School
The New Palestine girls golf team won a 3-way match at Hawk's Tail in Greenfield. The Dragons shot a 180 to defeat Greenfield-Central (190) and Franklin Central (211).
Abby Poole was medalist with a 40. Cassie Rooks shot 43, Carly Jones 48, while Bailey Kamp and Sarah Rose each shot 49.
"It was especially nice to see Abby rebound from last week and for everyone to break 50 on a tough course," NP coach Gregg Greene said, also noting the feat of beating Greenfield-Central on its home course. "We have to eliminate the other category in our stats before we can contend for the county next week."
The Dragons are now 5-2 on the season. They host Fishers Wednesday at The Links.
The New Palestine tennis team fell to No. 8 Delta 5-0.
"There's a reason they're ranked eighth in the state," NP coach Chris Hardin said. "We took 17 games total throughout the varsity lineup. We played pretty solid, the guys competed with them."
New Palestine (2-1) hosts Greenfield-Central on Wednesday.
The Dragon JV won 8-7.
Gabbi Pierson posted her first career varsity shutout in goal in earning the draw, despite her team playing down a player for much of the game due to a red card. Pierson made 26 saves.
"Our team did a better job of getting to the ball first, but were just unable to put one in," NP coach Gina Fannin said. "We unfortunately received a red card in the first half and were forced to play a girl down for the rest of the game. In the second half our physical play earned us a yellow card. We continued to fight hard and you would never had know we were playing with one less player than the other team. We held them strong and did not give up."
The Dragons (1-3-1) next play Saturday at home against Warren Central.
Batesville won the JV match 4-2.
