Monday NPHS sports: Dragon VB wins opener

The Dragon volleyball team beat Connersville 25-18, 25-23, 25-17 Monday evening on the road.
The win was the first varsity victory for new NPHS head coach Kelli Whitaker.
Katlyn Keele led the Dragons with 17 kills. Jamie Morris had 23 digs.
"The girls came out to take care of business tonight," Whitaker said. "They were calm, poised and focused."
The Dragons won the JV match 15-25, 25-15, 15-10.
The Dragons' season continues Thursday at North Decatur.
The Dragons opened the season with a 2-1 home loss to Perry Meridian.
Madison Carpenter scored the Dragons' goal, finishing off a perfect cross into the middle by Natalie Kehrt to tie the game in the second half. Perry Meridian scored late to get the game-winner.
According to Dragons coach Gina Fannin, Gabbi Pierson had a solid game in goal.
"We fought hard and continued to fight right up until the end," Fannin said. "Gabbi Pierson had several phenomenal saves in goal tonight. Our girls have a lot to be proud of despite the score."
The Dragons won the JV game 3-1.
The Dragons next play Wednesday at Cathedral.
New Palestine split a 3-way meet, falling to Whiteland 180-183, but beating Knightstown.
Cassie Rooks won medalist honors with a 39, her first career medalist honor. Abby Poole shot a 41. Sarah Rose added a 50 and Bailey Kamp a 53.
The Dragons are now 2-2 in dual/tri-meets.
"We were hoping to set a tone for the upcoming sectional by beating Whiteland, who was recently added to our sectional along with Greenwood and Pendleton Heights," NP coach Gregg Greene said.
