Home » General NewsNew Palestine Thursday sports wrapupSeptember 7, 2012 By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High SchoolBoys soccer Shelbyville 2, New Palestine 1: The Golden Bears got the upper hand in a physical game that saw all goals scored on free kicks or penalty kicks. Shelbyville took a 1-0 lead going into halftime off a free kick. A penalty kick conversion gave the Bears a 2-0 lead before NP's Caleb Kramer scored off a free kick later in the second half. NP was unable to get the equalizer on the road. The game was an emotional one: eight cards were issued between the two teams, including a red card that forced NP to play a man down for part of the game. NP coach Bobby Holden cited the play of Bryson Basaran, Kramer and Bo Owens for the Dragons, who are now 4-3-1. "I believe we are a good team with talented players and passion to win, but their is a difference between passion for the game and losing your temper. Unfortunately the boys let their minds and attitude take them to a 2-1 loss," Holden said. "Winning a game is difficult with less players than the other team and starters sitting on the bench due to poor decision making on their part. I believe Shelbyville to be a good team and played well. Their goalkeeper, Charles Kocher, came up with big saves several times throughout the night. The referee crew did a good job throughout the game. This came down to us as a team not playing to our best potential mentally. We must improve drastically in that area." NP is back in action at home Saturday afternoon against Franklin. The Dragons won the JV game 1-0. Golf New Palestine wins 3-way: The Dragons shot a 200 at The Links to defeat Shelbyville (233) and Beech Grove (248) Thursday. Abby Poole was medalist with a 44. Bailey Kamp had a 50, Sarah Rose 52 and Cassie Rooks 54. The Dragons will join the seven other conference schools at Bear Chase in Shelbyville for the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet.
