W NECC DUALS: Fremont nips Fairfield by a point for team title

In a faceoff of schools that stood 4-0 on the day prior to the Northeast Corner Conference Super Duals championship bout Dec. 1 at Eastside, Fremont swelled up to post a 36-35 victory over Fairfield to claim league supremacy.

The Eagles reached the final round showdown by virtue of easy wins over host Eastside (62-12), Central Noble (63-18), West Noble (55-19), and Churubusco (45-30).

Fairfield, meanwhile, got there by escaping its opening-round match with Prairie Heights (43-42, with the Falcons advancing on a criteria tiebreak of most first points scored) before downing Lakeland (50-30), Churubusco (another one-point nail biter, 37-36), and Angola (39-33).

After the incredibly tense day the Falcons had endured just to get to the title tilt, it is both relatively amazing and totally unsurprising that they ended up losing by a single point.
