Bulldogs advance to play Frisco

Jason Medellin first home run of the season came at the perfect time.

Medellin’s home run capped North Dallas’s 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Hillcrest on Saturday in Game 3 of the Class 4A bi-district series at Reverchon Park.

Medellin, a senior, pitched a one-hitter in Game 2 to give ND a 3-0 victory and tie the series at 1-1.

North Dallas will play Frisco in the area round this weekend.

Trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning of the deciding game, the Bulldogs' Rudy Ramos reached base on an error and Mark Torres followed with a hit to right, scoring Ramos who went home on a throwing error. Torres ended up at third base on the play.

With Medellin at the plate, Torres scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 3-3.

Medellin then hit a 2-2 pitch into the trees at the left-centerfield fence and the Bulldogs led, 4-3.

Torres mowed down the Hillcrest hitters in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve the victory.

“I was just trying to get on base,” Medellin said afterward. “It was right down the middle. I didn’t know it was gone until I saw the umpires circling [with their hands.]”

Torres, who said he struggled in the 9-4 loss to Hillcrest Friday in Game 1, pitched five innings in Game 3 Saturday. Medellin pitched the first two innings.

“I was throwing strikes, getting good defense and I was ready to go,” Torres said.

In Game 2, Medellin gave up one hit, two walks and struck out nine in the complete-game victory. At one point, he retired 11 batters in a row.

“I was in the right mindset,” he said. “This is my senior year, and I want to keep it going.”

Locked in a 0-0 tie, the Bulldogs loaded the bases in the sixth inning on hits by Torres and Matt Morales, and a walk to Medellin. Ivan Rodriguez’s infield hit scored the first run. Then Khalil Wyatt drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single to left field to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

“This was big, especially to win both,” Medellin said.
