The North Dallas High boys baseball team prepares for the 2014 season.
The North Dallas boys baseball team opens the season with a new coach in Steven De La Cerda and a core of returning players, led by pitcher-shortstop Jason Medellin, catcher-pitcher Ivan Rodriguez, centerfielder-pitcher David Hernandez, outfielder Allen Garcia and infielder-pitcher Mark Torres.
“Pitching should be a key part of our success,” De La Cerda said. “Jason, Mark, David and Ivan have experience on the bump and with their leadership, pitching should benefit us. Also, our infield with Ivan as catcher and Jason at shortstop is a pretty solid infield. It is another one of our strengths.”
But aside from the four seniors, De La Cerda said this year’s squad is young and inexperienced. He sees a learning curve for the younger boys, but also an opportunity for them to step up.
“Also, staying healthy is important, we cant afford to lose any players this year to injuries,” De La Cerda said. “Everybody is important to what we do.”
North Dallas has won District 11-4A for the past five years, and hasn’t lost a district game since 2011.
“We've been fortunate to have success in this district,” De La Cerda said. “But as a new coach with a new team, I take every opponent seriously and we hope to compete with every one of them.
“New teams may emerge this year to compete for playoff spots, but we won't change who we are. We will approach every opponent with respect, take care of the little things, and hope to snag a win.”
