ND wins district wrestling championship
February 3, 2014By gary pina of North Dallas High School Booster Club
The theme for this year’s North Dallas boys wrestling team was “Ready.” The Bulldogs were definitely ready on Jan. 25, capturing their first district title at the District 7-4A meet at Sprague Fieldhouse.
“I knew we were going to do something this year,” said ND Coach Charles “CJ” Johnson. “This is my fourth-year team, with the younger Bulldogs added on. We had a large team to start off this year and everyone did well in the classrooms, with the helpful watch of Ms. [Arlene] Colbert. With poor equipment and no practice space, we have managed to put in the work.”
The boys team had a team score of 185, followed by Samuell (120.5), Kimball (105), Seagoville (78) and Bryan Adams (76).
The ND girls team finished seventh with 25 points behind winner Samuell (130) and Kimball (112).
Individual boys champions include Jonathan Garcia at 106 pounds, Charvoun Noeun at 126 pounds and Quenist Smith at 145 pounds. Second-place finishes included Washington Le at 113 pounds, Kevin Nguyen at 132 pounds, Hugo Martinez at 138 pounds, Jonathan Juarez at 170 pounds and Raphael Gonzalez at 182 pounds.
“Jonathan Garcia stands out from our team,” Johnson said. “He has always been under weight by 10 to 12 pounds, but he’s beat all odds. He’s truly gifted.”
Third-place finishes went to Zachary Smith (120 pounds), Johnny Dao (152 pounds) and Ivan Rodriguez (220 pounds). Jose Juarez took fifth at 160 pounds, and Latrevion Robinson finished fifth at 285 pounds.
In the girls division, Kaitlyn Contreras finished second at 148 pounds, Alejandra Tinajero finished third at 165 pounds and Brandi Baker finished sixth at 185 pounds.
Johnson said North Dallas has had regional qualifiers in the past but not district wins.
“They had to know what they really wanted, and they worked hard with each other to really get it,” Johnson said. “We are one team. We are now family.”
North Dallas wrestlers advance to regionals this weekend at Frisco Heritage High School, 14040 Eldorado Parkway in Frisco.
