Swimmers prepare for big meets in January
January 5, 2014By gary pina of North Dallas High School Booster Club
The North Dallas High swim team has two big meets coming up in January.
The first one is the City Meet on Jan. 10 and next is the District 11-4A meet on Jan. 19. Both are at at Loos Natatorium.
“I'd like to encourage everyone to come out and support the Bulldogs!” said Coach Erin Morrison, in her first season as head coach.
Morrison inherited a team with eight returning all-district swimmers.
“Coach [Chris] Barnhill did an amazing job last year of improving the number of students participating in swimming,” Morrison said in an email. “I’d like to keep that trend going.
“Our goal for this year is to continue to build the team and advance to regionals. Quite a few swimmers advanced last year, and we’d like to get at least the same number of swimmers back to regionals this year.”
The Bulldogs had at least 15 swimmers advance last year to regionals in relays and individual events, Morrison said.
“We lost a few really great seniors last year. The team is currently about half returning swimmers and half newbies,” Morrison said. “We’ve had a lot of sophomores join this year, which is great. I hope they’ve enjoyed being a part of the team enough to stick with it through their senior year.”
Swimming is a winter sport, with practice starting in September. Meets begin in mid-October and end in February. The Bulldogs work out on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Alamo Pool near Fair Park.
Morrison said the Bulldogs are a “fun group of kids to be around.”
“It's a really great group of kids. They do such a great job of supporting each other and cheering their teammates on during meets,” Morrison said.
“The veteran swimmers have also been a big help to me this year. I can usually count on one or two to help some of the new swimmers on starts, flip turns and breathing while the rest of the team is doing the main set. They all work really well together.”
