North Dallas Bulldogs Support League lends a helping hand
November 17, 2012By gary pina of North Dallas High School Booster Club
The energetic North Dallas Bulldogs Support League has raised more than $40,000 in support of academics and students at North Dallas High School, said NDBSL President Kitty Quiram Hickerson (class of ’65).
“For being in existence only two years, we are pleased with our progress, but there is so much more to do,” Hickerson said. “We enjoy a partnership with the Booster Club and are looking forward to forming alliances with other groups that support North Dallas.”
Hickerson said the Support League’s assistance includes Fresh Start, a summer program for incoming freshmen; Science Night; books and programs for the classrooms; professional development; needed classroom supplies; and SAT transportation.
“We also support the ND staff through start of the year with bags of classroom supplies, refreshments for staff meetings and end of year Teacher Appreciation luncheon,” she said.
The other officers include Pete Ball, vice president; Brenda Seitzler Coach (’64), treasurer; and Nedah Moyer Rose (’64), secretary.
The Support League was formed in June 2010. It was the brainstorm of three North Dallas HS alums — June Jordan Time (’63), Linda McCown McCullah (’62) and Arlene Colbert (’64) — who wanted to meet the academic needs of current students.
North Dallas had been designated as a low-performing school for five years and was in danger of closing or restructuring, so the alums decided it was time to help.
The group has 185 members. Membership is $20 and a $10 renewal each year. A lifetime membership is $200.
Hickerson said while the group is doing well, there’s also some growing pains.
“We are still slow in membership growth, but we are still in our infancy,” Hickerson said. “We are also working to form partnerships with local businesses so that even more opportunities may be offered to our students. Finding a foot in the door is not easy.”
Hickerson said alumni and friends of North Dallas are encouraged to support the group.
“Help us in contributing to the best educational opportunities for our Bulldogs,” she said. “We want our graduates to have every door open to them as they pursue their future.
“Join us in this worthwhile effort to make a difference in a young Bulldog’s future.”
