Bullock, Smith and Burdick are AP's best

RALEIGH - Kinston senior Reggie Bullock has been voted the 2009-10 Associated Press men's prep basketball player of the year for North Carolina, while Butler's Cierra Burdick and Forestview's Shannon Smith were voted as the women's basketball co-players of the year.

Bullock led his team to a second state title in three seasons to earn 17 of a possible 22 votes from sports writers across the state. Bullock has signed with North Carolina and is a McDonald's All-American. He averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds per game to make the AP All-State men's team for a third straight season.

Bishop McGuinness senior Aaron Toomey was second in the voting. He averaged 29 points per game.

Burdick and Smith each earned nine of a possible 22 votes from sports writers across the state. Bishop McGuinness junior Megan Buckland was third with four votes after helping her team win its fifth straight 1-A state championship.

Burdick, a junior guard who averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds for the 4-A state champions, has committed to Tennessee.

Smith, a senior guard who averaged 23 points and seven assists for the 3-A champions. has signed with North Carolina.

Lake Norman's Brandon Jolly was voted men's coach of the year while Bishop McGuinness' Brian Robinson was voted women's coach of the year.
