DEEP RUN — South Lenoir Athletic Director Lisa Smith couldn’t inform Tim Jenkins he had been approved to be the school’s football coach Tuesday, as Jenkins spent the day at the hospital with his wife, who went into labor that morning.

In December, Jenkins was named the school’s baseball coach — closing the quarter-century of leadership by Troy Eason. Jenkins became the program’s fourth baseball coach in school history.

On Monday, following approval by the Lenoir County Public Schools Board of Education, Jenkins began his tenure leading a less storied program at the school, the Blue Devils football team. He becomes the 11th coach in school history, but the sixth in the last 10 years.

Smith said Jenkins was a perfect fit for the school and for the football position.

“We interviewed several people and his visions are basically the same as mine and (Principal Steve) Saint-Amand’s,” she said. “He is very knowledgeable in both of these two sports and we’re very lucky to get him here.”

Jenkins was the athletic director at Wallace-Rose Hill prior to being named the South Lenoir baseball coach. He also served as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs football team.

He replaces Kevin Wilson, who took over South Lenoir’s football program in 2008, who took over a Blue Devils program that had one winning season and had made the state playoffs twice in their previous 11 years.

Wilson, a Richlands graduate who played against the Blue Devils in his high school days, took a program that had been to the postseason only three times prior to his tenure and led it there in consecutive years (2009-10) for the second time in school history.

Wilson announced last month that he was retiring from coaching due to “personal family reasons.” He will continue to teach physical education at the school.
