Sports Xpress Hoops Tour: Kentucky Bank Shootout
December 8, 2012By Kenneth True of Nations Elite
Lexington Christian came into this match-up against Bourbon County (1-2), the Colonels came in (1-1). The storyline of the game was Bourbon Co.’s Charles “Snoop” Johnson who took over the game whenever he wanted to.
The LCA Eagles would race out to a 17-15 lead after the 1st quarter but it was known early that Charles “Snoop” Johnson had came to play. Johnson pitched in 7 points in the opening quarter, and with his sidekick Chris Gillispie still recovering from a torn ACL that kept him sideline all last season he got some help from a unlikely person in Devin Bellville who chipped in 6 points in the opening quarter.
What hurt the Colonels early on was LCA’s size as the Eagles won the 1st quarter rebounding battle 10-3. Johnson wasn’t done in the 1st quarter as he would slice and dice his way through LCA’s defense for 8 more points giving him 15 at the break. However, it was evident Johnson couldn’t do it all himself as LCA would take a 27-23 lead into the break and owned a 23-13 rebounding advantage at the half.
You kept waiting for that one player to step up for the Eagles and many thought it would be Tyler Harville. However Jon Lannertone had 11 through the first 3 quarters and Harville struggled to get 4. However the Eagles size still gave them a advantage on the boards which was the reason LCA kept Bourbon at bay through 3 quarters and leading 38-35 heading into the 4th.
In the 4th quarter it was the “Snoop” Johnson show as he carried the Colonels scoring 9 points including two FT’s late that proved to be the game winners. Johnson would finish with 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 steals. Gillispie who is rated as one of the top players in the 10th Region struggled once again shooting 1-10 and only scoring 2 points. Belleville however played big for the Colonels pitching in 14 points, 5 boards, and 2 steals in 20 minutes of action.
Charles “Snoop” Johnson was chosen as the Sports Xpress Player of the Game after his performance. Also worth mentioning is Matt Rose of LCA’s double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bourbon County Colonels improved to (2-1) with the win, while Lexington Christian dropped to (1-3) on the young season.
