Sports Xpress Tour: Kentucky Bank Shootout Preview
December 5, 2012By Kenneth True of Nations Elite
Jordan Green and Henry Clay headline the 2012 Kentucky Bank Shootout.
The Kentucky Bank Shootout at Bourbon County High School in Paris (KY) was once one of the best events in the state of Kentucky for prep hoops. Past teams that have been featured were Oak Hill Academy, Brentwood Academy, etc.
Many guys now playing in the NBA or in college played in this event including Kevin Durant, Yancey Gates, Brandon Wright, and Nolan Smith to name just a few. This years field isn’t as star studded but should make for some good basketball over the two day event.
Friday December 7th
Clark Co. @ Bourbon Co. (G)
You’ll get a look at the host Lady Colonels who are led by Asia Sims, the daughter of former Louisville star Alvin Sims. Sims running mate is freshman guard and daughter of the Colonels head coach (Juan Byars) Anovia. The Lady Colonels will be looking to find some consistency and improve to (4-2) on the young season against district foe Clark Co.
The visiting Lady Cardinals will enter this event (0-3) however the young Lady Cardinals opened their season with the #1 team in the state in Marion Co. and then faced off against Ashland Blazer and their talented guard Alexis Robinson who visited Kentucky for Midnight Madness.
Lexington Christian @ Bourbon Co.
The hosts Colonels enters their event (1-1) and are looking to bounce back after an embarrassing loss at the hands of region rival Mason Co. 79-39. The Colonels will be led into battle with a talented back court duo of Chris Gillispie and Charles ‘Snoop’ Johnson.
The Eagles of LCA which features Kentucky head coach John Calipari’s son Brad enter this event (1-2). The Eagles have a impressive guard of their own in Tyler Harville.
Saturday December 8th
Bath Co. vs. Frankfort
The Bath Co. Wildcats are coming off a memorable football season that saw them finish 2nd in their district. The Wildcats are off to a fast start in basketball with a (3-1) record. Mac Becraft leads the Wildcats with 16.0 ppg.
Staying with the football theme the Frankfort Panthers had one of their best teams in school history this season under Bourbon County graduate Craig Foley. Two football players will lead this hoops team in Jalen Washington, and Aaron Jackson.
Lincoln Co. vs. Holmes
Look near the top of the 12th region standings annually and that’s where you’ll find Lincoln Co. the Patriots always seem to put together a winner. Head Coach Jeff Jackson hopes this years group will lead the Patriots back to their normal spot. The Patriots will play East Jessamine on Friday night prior to this matchup.
Covington Holmes has a nice collection of talent, and will face Walton-Verona on Thursday night before heading down I-75 to Paris. Jason Booher is widely respected as one of the best coaches across the state of Kentucky.
Henderson Co. vs. Bryan Station
Henderson Co. no doubt has the farthest way to come to reach this event being out in Western Kentucky. The Colonels will face Hopkinsville and Muhlenburg Co. before this game. The Colonels already have a impressive win on their resume in beating John Hardin 75-69 on Dec. 1st.
The Defenders seem to always field a fast, athletic team and it should be no different this season. The Defenders opened their season with a big win over Pulaski Co. 72-62 and then pushed Henry Clay who many feel is a top 5 team in the state before falling 52-48. The player to watch for the Defenders is guard Larry Morton.
Henry Clay vs. West Jessamine
Henry Clay has one of the most talented teams throughout the state, and headlines this years field at the Kentucky Bank Shootout. The Blue Devils are coached by former Bourbon Co. head man Daniel Brown. Brown has 3 guys that will be playing D-1 basketball in a couple years in Christen Cunningham, Jordan Green, and Trey Grundy. The Blue Devils will enter this contest (3-1).
The Colts of West Jessamine will face McCreary Central on Friday before heading into their toughest game in the early season. The Colts are led by Daulton Peters and his 17.0 ppg, Peters doesn’t have to do it all on his own as he’ll get help from Will Henderson, Chase Fain, and Robby Irgang.
Augusta @ Bourbon Co.
The Panthers will have a shot to make a statement in the 10th Region before they face the Colonels as they’ll travel to Falmouth to face off against Pendleton Co. Augusta will be led by one of the best players to ever grace the halls of Augusta High School in Brent Bach.
The Colonels as mentioned above will be led into this game by Johnson and Gillispie. It’ll be interesting to see if the Colonels can find more scoring options outside of their back court duo.
