Senior Night Ends with Big Win

Mustangs Run Away with 54-23 Win on Final Home Game of the 2013-2014 Season

It’s seems like it’s been years since practice began back in the first week of November.  Basketball season is always a long season no matter what the win/loss record is.  But the end of the regular season came and went tonight at Marquette High School.  On a night when the stands were packed with fans to say farewell to Bryant Walker, Justin Wojtowicz, and Brooks Gerrity, Marquette would jump out to an early lead and never look back, claiming a 54-23 win on Senior Night over the Warriors from Fox High School.

The first few possessions of the first quarter went back and forth, with Fox jumping out to an early 3-0 lead.  Marquette would tally the next 4 points and lead 4-3.  A Fox free-throw would tie the game at 4, but on Marquette’s next possession, it happened.  On a night when the greatest student section in the area, the STANG GANG, completed their annual Silent Night, once Marquette scored their 6th point, the roof was blown off the gymnasium.  Marquette would go on an incredible 18-2 run from that moment to finish the first quarter and lead at the end of 1, 24-6.  And the momentum wouldn’t stop at the quarter.  The Mustangs continued to rack up the points and get stop after stop, outscoring the Warriors 18-5 in the second quarter and establishing an impressive 42-11 lead at the half.

Although the scoring slowed down in the 3rd quarter, the defense did not.  The Mustangs did an excellent job defending throughout the stanza and held Fox to just 5 points in the frame again.  By the time the night was over, the Warriors were only able to capitalize on 8 made field goals, and only claimed 2 offensive rebounds.  One area of weakness in recent games for Marquette has been the rebounding advantage for the opponent.  But the Mustangs looked like their old selves tonight as they won the rebound war convincingly, 32-18.  When the final buzzer sounded, the Mustangs ended their regular season victorious with a 54-23 win and finished with a 12-12 record…an excellent finish for a team that, at one point, was sitting with a 4-9 record.

The Mustangs begin post-season play on Thursday, March 6th in the Class 5 District 2 Tournament against Parkway South at Lafayette High School.  Tip off is set for 7:00.

Hard Hat Winner: Justin Wojtowicz
