Marquette 35 Webster Groves 61

Mustangs Fail to Match Webster’s Intensity Early as Webster Cruises

Very few teams have traveled to Webster’s Roberts Gymnasium and come away victorious in the past 13 years.  The Mustangs are the only team to have won in this gym not once, not twice, but three times in the past 10 years.  Webster refused to allow the Mustangs make that number grow to four, though, as they imposed their will early in the game to run away with a 61-35 victory.

The game was never close as Webster jumped out to an early 8-0 lead simply by making direct cuts in front of defenders and attacking the basket.  After a timeout, Marquette would close the gap on a 3 pointer from the right corner, making the score 10-5.  But that was as close as the Mustangs would get all night.  Before the Mustangs could blink, Webster tallied an 8-0 run to end the quarter and Marquette was down 18-5.  The 2nd quarter was more of the same on both ends of the floor.  Marquette would shoot a cold 2-20 in the first half and only gather 1 offensive rebound.  The Mustangs were embarrassed on the boards, losing the rebounding battle 22-6 in the first half and 34-14 for the game.  Webster would outscore the Mustangs 16-4 in the 2nd quarter and claim a demanding 34-9 lead at the half.

Marquette would at least compete in the 2nd half, but it was too little too late, as Webster still outscored Marquette 11-10 in the 3rd quarter to trail 45-19 at the end of 3.  However, the few bright moments of the night came from some excellent play by some reserves down the stretch, taking advantage of their time with excellent effort and aggressive play at the basket, something Marquette lacked in the first 3 quarters.  The Mustangs would have their best quarter offensively in the 4th, but the visiting team would still leave Robert’s Gymnasium with a disappointing showing.

The Mustangs must regroup in a hurry if they wish to send the seniors out with a victory.  Senior night is this Friday at MHS against a very improved Fox team.  Please come out and cheer the Mustangs to a victory and give the three seniors a night to remember as they put on their Mustang uniform for the final time at the Marquette Athletic Complex.  Game time is set for 7:00.
