Marquette Back in Win Column

Marquette Makes Just Enough Plays Down the Stretch to Defeat Mehlville

Some wins are just ugly.

But a win is a win, and tonight, the Mustangs had to win ugly to get back to the .500 mark with two games left in the season.  In a contest that saw Mehlville play tough defense, taking Marquette out of any offensive rhythm throughout the entire contest, the Mustangs found a way to make a few big shots when they needed them the most as they outlasted the Panthers 40-36.

The first half saw Marquette force the issue offensively, while Mehlville used patience, discipline, and quality shot selection to run out to an early 5-0 lead.  The Mustangs would begin attacking the basket inside the next few possessions, thus opening a few looks from 3 later in the quarter.  Mehlville still held a 13-12 advantage after 1, and that advantage grew to 23-19 at the half as the Mustangs failed to execute offensively and defensively.  Poor shot selection and breakdowns in communication forced Marquette to regroup at the half.

Although the 2nd half was not much prettier than the first, Marquette did at least defend much stronger than they did in the first half, holding the Panthers to just 6 points in the 3rd quarter.  At the end of 3 quarters, Marquette jumped back on top 31-29.  Unfortunately, the Mustangs would hit another scoring drought, missing on a few open looks both inside and out.  The Panthers would begin the quarter on a 5-0 run to claim a 34-31 lead with 4:20 to play.  But a 6-2 run from the Mustangs was capped off as Marquette would gather a HUGE offensive rebound and find a wide-open 3 from the left wing to reclaim the lead 37-36 with just under a minute to play.  All the Mustangs would need to finish the game were defensive stops.  Some nice defense on Mehlville’s best player down the stretch helped keep the Panthers scoreless the last 2 minutes of the game, and the home team would escape with a close 40-36 victory to move their record to 11-11 with only 2 games remaining in the season.

Marquette will be back in action Tuesday, February 25, to face the mighty Webster Groves Statesmen.  Tip is set for 7:00.

Hard Hat Winner: Sean McCracken
