Lafayette 56 Marquette 30

Lancers Pound Mustangs

It’s always said when Marquette and Lafayette meet, throw the records out the door.  Unfortunately, the records held true to last night’s game as Lafayette outplayed the Mustangs in all facets of the game on their way to a 56-30 blowout win at Lafayette.

The start of the game looked like two very good teams matched up against each other as both teams made a few shots, missed a few shots, and stopped the opponent defensively.  It was also in the first quarter where Marquette would make their only 3-point attempt of the night (finishing 1-18 from behind the 3-point line).  But the Mustangs were giving themselves chances as they at least handled the ball well enough to actually take a shot on their first 9 possessions of the quarter.  The Lancers still held a 2-point lead at the end of 1 quarter, 11-9.

The 2nd and 3rd quarter, unfortunately, were a completely difference story.  Marquette would literally throw the basketball into the bleachers on 5 possessions in the 2nd quarter alone, on their way to 7 turnovers in 12 possessions (the goal for each game is to have 8 or less turnovers).  Along with the turnovers, the Mustangs couldn’t connect on one field goal attempt inside or out, as Marquette went 0-8 from the floor.  What seemed like a 20-point halftime deficit was only 14 and the Mustangs looked to regroup at halftime.  But the team that came out of the locker room was not the same Mustang squad that showed up the previous 4 weeks.  Lafayette would crush any chance of Marquette making the game competitive on their way to a 28-9 run in the 3rd quarter, upping their lead to 33 points at the end of 3 quarters, and that was all she wrote.  Lafayette would only muster 3 points in the 4th and still walk way with a convincing 56-30 win.

Marquette would end the game shooting and uncharacteristic 10-41 from the field and 9-18 from the free-throw line.

The Mustangs look to regroup against an improved Mehlville Panther squad next Friday, February 21st, for Faculty Night at MHS.  Tip is set for 7:00.
