Big 2nd Half Lifts Mustangs to Road Victory

Mustangs Begin Big Week with a Win at Parkway North

Having a 4-game winning streak snapped at Jeff City Friday night, the Mustangs looked to get back in the win column Monday against the Vikings from Parkway North.  After a tight contest in the first three quarters, Marquette turned up the heat in the 4th to go home with a 19-point victory at Parkway North.

The first quarter saw the Mustangs come out without focus as some defensive miscues lead to some easy Parkway North baskets in the early going.  The Mustangs did a much better job of communicating on the defensive end the 2nd half of the quarter, and Marquette held a 15-11 advantage after 1 quarter of play.  Parkway North would respond with a nice quarter of their own outscoring the Mustangs 11-7.  Due to another split second where the Mustangs lacked focus, North was able to hit a three at the buzzer to tie the game at 22 heading into the locker room.

Halftime was kind to the Mustangs.  Marquette would score on their first 5 possessions to start the half, and 7 of their first 9 possessions overall (the only possessions the Mustangs didn’t score were due to turnovers).  Marquette would shoot 7-10 from the field and 4-5 from the charity stripe to secure a 20-point quarter and lead after 3, 42-37.  The Mustang defense in the 4th quarter picked up as well, holding the Vikings to just 5 points while scoring 19 of their own.  Marquette would shoot a red-hot 70% from the field in the 2nd half and go 7-8 from the free-throw line to walk away with a 61-42 win at Parkway North.

The Mustangs are back at it again tomorrow against conference rival Eureka.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.

Hard Hat Winner: Sean McCracken
