Marquette Takes Home Eldon Tourney Title for 2nd Consecutive Year

Weekend Ends with 59-50 Victory Over Sedalia Smith Cotton in Title Game

Championship Saturday at the 83rd Annual Eldon Tournament found defending champion Marquette back in the title game facing another Class 5 foe in the Tigers from Sedalia Smith Cotton.  What had been an excellent weekend of basketball so far for Marquette would end appropriately for the Mustangs as they battled their way to the tournament title for the second consecutive year with a final score of 59-50.

Basketball is a game of runs.  The test of a good team is learning how to keep composure and minimize the opponent’s run, all the while maximizing your own run.  Marquette was tested in this department early as Sedalia came out of the locker room on fire.  After just 90 seconds of play, the Tigers already held an 8-0 lead which grew to 11-1 before Marquette could stop the bleeding.  The Mustangs would hold the Tigers to just 4 points in the last 5 minutes of the quarter while going on a nice 16-4 run of their own.  After trailing by 10 early, Marquette would actually claim the lead after 1 quarter, 17-15.  The second quarter saw the hot shooting cool down for both teams, and the defense improved for both as well.  The Mustangs would win the 2nd quarter, though, and lead at the half 26-19.  Much of that lead was due to the incredible rebounding performance from Marquette, owning an astonishing 18-3 rebounding advantage in the first half!

The 3rd quarter saw another nice run early for Sedalia while Marquette would start the half 2-13 from the field in their first 10 possessions.  The Mustangs, however, would go on another run of their own at the end of the 3rd quarter, scoring on their last 4 possessions (including two huge 3-point buckets…one as time expired in the quarter).  After 3 quarters, Marquette’s lead was at 41-35.  The fourth quarter was a heated quarter for sure as both teams wanted to take home the tournament title, but cooler heads would prevail and Marquette would head to the line to sink 12-14 free-throws to keep Sedalia from ever overtaking the lead.  All but 6 of Marquette’s 18 points from the 4th quarter would come at the charity stripe, the other 6 points coming on 2 more HUGE 3-pointers to fend off another run from Sedalia.  And as the buzzer sounded, it was again the Mustangs who would claim the first place trophy at Eldon.

The Mustangs would finish the game with 8 turnovers, an 18-24 performance from the free-throw line (the Mustangs went 21-23 in the semi-finals), a 34-16 rebounding advantage, and hold the 6’7” center for Sedalia to just 6 points.

Marquette will be back in action on Tuesday at Parkway North, looking to add to their 4-game winning streak.  Game time is set for 6:00.
