Last Second Shot Lifts Mustangs into Semis at Eldon
Mustangs Go Length of the Floor in 2.7 Seconds to Claim the Win
Coming off a win at Lindbergh, the Marquette Boys Basketball squad entered tonight’s contest in the 83rd annual Eldon Tournament looking to do something they haven’t done all year: establish a winning streak. Needing to make in incredible play with 2.7 seconds left and down 1 with the length of the floor to go, Marquette did just that. In what seemed almost improbable, the Mustangs claimed victory over the Bulldogs of Carl Junction, 57-56.
Knowing that Carl Junction would be a very athletic squad, the Mustangs should have been ready and focused the moment they stepped foot off the bus into town. But that just wasn’t the case. Although the Mustangs would hit 2 3-pointers in their first 3 possessions, the failed to tally another point the rest of the quarter, going 0-7 and committing 5 turnovers. It seemed as though the beating was on for Carl Junction, as the Mustangs left their defense back in St. Louis as well to begin the game. Marquette would give up inexcusable looks both inside and out and fall behind after 1 quarter, 16-6.
The second quarter saw that lead grow for Carl Junction as they scored on their first two possessions. After about 2 minutes of play in the 2nd quarter, the Mustangs decided to wake up and become aggressive themselves. The turnovers decreased, and the shots started to fall. With the exception of 2 unexplainable plays just before half time, Marquette outscored Carl Junction by 2 and was down 31-23.
The Mustangs needed to regroup at the half and come out an entirely different team to have any chance against a solid Bulldog squad. Nice ball movement gave the Mustangs excellent looks around the perimeter, and some post touches inside loosened up the defense as well. Marquette would tally their best quarter of the night offensively, outscoring Carl Junction 19-17 in the frame and only down 6 after 3. But the defense definitely showed up in the 4th, leading to an exciting finish. With the Mustangs down by 1, an excellent driving layup with 25 seconds left put Marquette up 1. Marquette would have a nice defensive stand, gather the rebound, and Carl Junction was forced to foul. All the Mustangs would need is to get the ball in bounds, be strong, get fouled, and sink the free-throws. But with 6 seconds remaining, Carl Junction would sneak in front of an in-bounds pass, get the steal, and lay it in giving the Bulldogs the 1 point advantage. A time out with 2.7 seconds left gave the Mustangs one last chance to set up a full court play, and the Mustangs executed the play to perfection. An incredible full court pass and catch and wonderful shot fake, drive, and layup at the basket, all within 2.7 seconds, gave the Mustangs the unbelievable win over Carl Junction, 57-56.
The Mustangs will play against O’Fallon Christian tomorrow night at 7:30 in the semi-finals of the Eldon Tournament.
