Mustangs Find a Way at Lindbergh

4th Quarter FTs Key in Victory

In a contest that saw two teams looking to re-enter the win column after disappointing losses, Marquette was able to hold off a late Lindbergh Flyer run to capture a 49-43 win at Lindbergh in a Saturday afternoon matchup of Suburban West Conference foes.

Defense is always the name of the game when the Mustangs and the Flyers meet, and today was no different.  Although the first quarter was hard fought, the Mustangs would turn the ball over 4 times in 10 possessions.  Without the turnovers, Marquette scored on 4 of the 6 possessions they didn’t turn the ball over to lead at the end of 1 quarter 9-5.  The Mustangs would start to shoot the ball a little better in the second quarter, going 6-10 from the field including 2-4 from behind the arc in route to a 14-point 2nd quarter.  With the exception of a few communication mishaps on the defensive side of the floor, Marquette was still able to outscore the Flyers 14-9 in the quarter and lead at the half, 23-14.

Lindbergh would come out in the 3rd quarter much more aggressive on both ends of the floor and force the Mustangs into 5 turnovers in their 13 possessions.  An inconsistent performance from the field (3-8) helped Lindbergh close the gap quickly.  Entering the 4th quarter, the Mustangs held on to a 4-point advantage, 31-27.  But the Mustangs would play a solid 4th quarter.  Only 1 turnover made it difficult for Lindbergh to claim any lead.  And even though the Flyers would heat up from behind the arc in the 4th nailing 4 treys (2 back-to-back late in the game), Marquette would at least give themselves chances to score with the lower turnover count.  Most impressively, the Mustangs would step to the FT line and knock down their last 10-13 from the charity stripe late in the game to hold off Lindbergh.  The Mustangs outscored Lindbergh 18-16 in the 4th to come out victorious 49-43.

Marquette’s next opponent will be against the Bulldogs of Carl Junction in the 83rd annual Eldon Tournament in Eldon, Missouri, on Thursday, January 30.  Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Hard Hat Winner: Joe Kimerle
