Parkway West 33 Marquette 32

Lackluster First Half Sets Tone for Disappointing Night

The Marquette Mustang Boys Basketball team fell short against another good opponent in the Longhorns of Parkway West, 33-32, at the Marquette Athletic Complex.  The Mustangs could only manage 4 points in the first quarter, but the Longhorns failed to establish themselves offensively, too.  The teams were tied at 4 after one quarter.  Parkway West would outscore the Mustangs 10-7 in the 2nd quarter to take a 3 point lead into halftime.  Marquette would only shoot 3-18 from the field in the half, missing plenty of open looks, and only capture 2 offensive rebounds compared to the visitor's 7 offensive rebounds in the first half.

The second half saw Marquette play harder, but the offense was still left somewhere else.  Marquette outscored the opponent 10-9 in the 3rd quarter to close with 2 at 22-20 at the end of 3 quarters.  Eventually, the Mustangs would claim the lead, but it was short lived.  A 3-point bucket down the stretch pushed Parkway West out in front.  The Mustangs desparately needed someone to attack the basket and finish, and a few nice plays late in the 4th quarter kept Marquette within striking distance.  With 42 seconds to go and Marquette down 3, the Mustangs would connect on a huge trey of their own to tie the game at 32.  Parkway would hold for the last shot, and with 2.1 seconds remaning, the Mustangs would lose sight of their man defensively and be forced to foul, sending West to the line.  West would connect on the first free-throw and miss the second intentionally, but a lane violation gave the Mustangs the ball out-of-bounds with no more time off the clock.  Although Marquette would run a final "home run" play flawlessly, they couldn't connect and went home disappointed yet again with a 33-32 defeat.

Marquette will travel to Lindbergh on Saturday to take on the Flyers.  Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
