Mustangs Continue to Improve Despite Tough Week

A tough week of basketball came to a close with a hard fought game tonight against the Patriots of Parkway South at Parkway South High School.  Although the Mustangs gave an effort good enough to win many of the games they have played so far this year, it wasn’t enough tonight against a Patriot team that continued their hot streak as they defeated Marquette 57-49.

The Patriots established themselves from the tip-off as they climbed to a 15-7 advantage after 1 quarter.  Quick shots offensively and a string of 4 turnovers in 5 possessions kept he Mustangs from finding any offensive rhythm.   But the Mustangs adjusted nicely and played tough basketball the rest of the game as Marquette turned the ball over only 6 times total in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters combined.  Once that happened, Marquette showed they could play with one of the Suburban West Conference’s best teams.  Although Marquette was outscored 15-12 in the second quarter due in large part from a failure to attack the basket and get to the paint, the Mustangs gave themselves chances to put the ball in the basket with stronger ball movement.  Parkway South still held an 11-point lead at the half, 30-19.

The 3rd quarter was Marquette’s strongest quarter.  Only 1 turnover and great movement offensively helped Marquette cut into the Patriot lead, 43-36.  But when push came to shove, the Patriots just made more plays down the stretch.  Marquette cut the lead to 5 in the 4th quarter, but South began giving the Mustangs problems on the offensive glass, winning the rebound margin in the second half 16-10.  A gutsy effort fell just short as South held on for the victory 57-49.

The loss tonight marks the second time this season Marquette has suffered a losing streak of 3 games.  Marquette will have a chance to right the ship this Wednesday against another solid opponent, the Longhorns of Parkway West.  Game time is set for 7:00 at home.
