Oakville 59 Marquette 48

Oakville’s Size Too Much for Mustangs

Coming off a difficult loss at home on “Fight Cancer” night, Marquette hit the road for a contest with the Oakville Tigers, a pre-season favorite to win the Suburban West Conference.  Marquette would have a difficult task at hand with Oakville’s 2-headed monster, and although the Mustangs scrapped and clawed throughout the entire game, Oakville’s run in the 2nd quarter was the decisive run, helping the Tigers claim a 59-48 victory.

Similar to last night, Marquette started the game playing extremely well on both ends of the floor.  Although Oakville’s 6’11” presence in the middle would intimidate some, the Mustangs were able to battle and claim 5 offensive rebounds alone in the first quarter, thus setting the tone that the visitors were not going to leave without a fight.  A 5-11 performance from the field to go along with the 5 offensive rebounds helped Marquette establish a lead at 12-9 at the end of 1.  The second quarter, though, was a rollercoaster of runs.  The beginning of the quarter belonged to the Mustangs as they increased their lead to 9 at 18-9.  But the Tigers would respond by picking up their defensive pressure and overplaying the passing lanes.  Oakville would finish the quarter on a 20-4 run and own a 29-22 advantage at the half.

One of Marquette’s disappointments throughout the young season has been the inability to come out of the locker room ready to play after halftime.  Tonight’s 3rd quarter deemed much better than yesterday’s as both teams traded baskets throughout the quarter.  Oakville’s lead remained 7 after 3 quarters, 42-35.  The Mustangs were still within striking distance, but a pair of inexcusable turnovers in the 4th quarter leading to two breakaway dunks for the home team kept any thought of a come-from-behind victory out of reach.  The Tigers would outscore the Mustangs 17-13 in the 4th and claim the 59-48 victory.

Marquette’s gauntlet week continues Friday night against the Patriots of Parkway South.  Tip is set for 7:00 at Parkway South.
