Colts Rebound Their Way to Victory in Second Half

Throughout the 2013-2014 season, the Marquette Mustangs have competed their way through close games against some excellent basketball teams in the St. Louis area.  One of the keys this season for Marquette has been their ability to outrebound much larger teams and win the 50/50 battle.  Tonight's “Fight Cancer” night, however, was a different story.  Parkway Central pounded the Mustangs in the second half, winning every loose ball and outrebounding the Mustangs on the offensive and defensive glass en route to a 39-29 victory on a very special night for all teams involved.

The early going saw the Mustangs on fire offensively as they connected on 5 of their first 7 shots and grabbed 4 offensive rebounds.  An early 8-0 run by Marquette and 12-4 advantage after one quarter of play should have given the home team the confidence they needed to aggressively attack the Parkway Central defense.  But a very strong and tough Parkway Central team would buckle down defensively and limit Marquette’s scoring opportunities as the Mustangs had a difficult time even entering their offense in the second quarter (and the rest of the game for that matter).  3-7 shooting in the quarter (that’s not a typo…7 shot attempts) and only 1 offensive rebound meant a very low scoring quarter and Parkway Central was able to muscle their way to a 19-19 tie at the half.

The 3rd quarter has not been a kind quarter to Marquette throughout the season, and tonight was no different.  Holding a team to 8 points in the quarter should mean gaining a lead back, but only mustering 1 made field goal on 1-7 shooting (again only 7 shot attempts) thanks to a stingy Colt defense made it difficult on Marquette to even find an open teammate.  Numerous moving screen violations added to Marquette’s frustration as they could only put 3 points on the scoreboard.  Marquette, however, would stay close, and with 4 minutes to go, the Mustangs were only down 2 points.  But consecutive offensive rebounds (the Colts grabbed 4 offensive rebounds in the quarter while the Mustangs could not gather a single one) and numerous victories in the loose ball department by the visitors crushed Marquette’s chances at reclaiming the lead.  Parkway Central would finish the game shooting 12 more free-throws than the home team and walked away with a 39-29 win.

The Mustangs need to regroup and refocus quickly as they have another strong opponent in less than 24 hours against the Tigers of Oakville.  Marquette will have to bring their best on both ends of the floor if they want to have a chance to stay at the top of the conference standings.  Game time at Oakville is set for 5:30 p.m.

We would like to send out a special thank you to everyone who helped make our "Fight Cancer" night a success.  All proceeds raised tonight will go to the Coaches vs. Cancer Foundation.  We thank you all for your donations and your support.
