Washington Defeats Marquette at Meramec
The Mustangs took to the court in a consolation game today hoping for both a stronger shooting performance and a stronger effort today against the Blue Jays of Washington High School. The effort was there today, but unfortunately for Marquette, the shooting was not as the Blue Jays sent Marquette home from the Meramec Tournament 54-39.
The first quarter started the cold shooting as Marquette only connected on 2 field goal attempts and went 1-4 from the free-throw line. But the 2nd quarter gave Marquette some momentum as the Mustangs connected on 4 3-point field goal attempts en route to a 16 – 12 run. After a nice 3-point field goal in the corner Marquette found themselves down only 3 at 24-21 against a very good Blue Jay squad.
Similar to yesterday’s game, halftime was not kind to the Mustangs. The 3rd quarter was all Washington as the cold shooting for MHS continued. Washington outscored MHS 18-5 in the quarter as Marquette went 1-11 from the field. The game looked as though it could get out of hand at that point as Washington gained a 42-26 lead. But Marquette kept fighting and scored on three of their first 5 possessions to cut the Blue Jay lead to 12 at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Unfortunately, Marquette would not get any closer the rest of the contest as the cold shooting then again took effect. Although the Mustangs had chances to close the gap, they just couldn’t capitalize. Marquette would finish 3-10 from the FT line and 15-54 from the field. The positive, Marquette did a much better job of handling the basketball as they only committed 8 turnovers for the game, a vast improvement from earlier in the season.
Marquette will have some time off before they take the floor again on Friday, January 3rd, against an athletic and aggressive Kirkwood squad. Game time is set for 7:00 at Kirkwood.
