Blasts From the Past
Cold Night at Meramec
December 28, 2013By Kevin Schultz of Marquette Mustang Basketball
The Mustangs entered tonight’s contest at the Meramec Holiday Festival looking for to build on their previous win with a nice against the Warriors of St. Charles West. But the Warriors lock-down defense frustrated the Mustangs throughout the entire contest, resulting in a 45-28 loss for Marquette.
Marquette started the game with a plethora of 3-point shots in the first quarter, settling for jumper after jumper. 6 of the Mustangs’ first 8 shots were from behind the arc in the first, but MHS did capitalize on three of them. A decent defensive first quarter found the game tied at 11.
The second quarter continued to be an offensive struggle for both teams, and Marquette continued the 3-point barrage. Buckets were at a minimum for both teams in the second quarter as the Warriors took a 2-point lead into the half at 20-18.
The second half belonged to St. Charles West as Marquette could only muster 1 made field goal the entire half while only getting up 14 shots at the basket. MHS did happen to get to the free-throw line 12 times in the half and sink 9 of them, but the offensive woes were just too much. St. Charles West outscored the Mustangs in the 3rd quarter 16-6 and 9-4 in the final stanza and Marquette went home with a disappointing 45-28 loss.
The Mustangs get a chance to redeem themselves quickly as they play another quality opponent in the Washington Blue Jays Saturday at 12:30 at Meramec.
