Defensive Effort Lifts Mustangs to Win at Family Arena

One way to test a young team is to see how the team responds to disappointing losses.  Coming off what seemed like a meltdown Saturday at Webster, the Mustangs regrouped, competed, and turned in their first four quarters of solid basketball tonight at Family Arena in a 68-42 win over the Spartans of Francis Howell Central.

The first quarter found the Mustangs clicking on all cylinders right from the tip.  Due to quality ball movement on the offensive end and a smart shot selection, the Mustangs scored on every possession they didn’t turn the ball over in the first quarter.  The Mustangs shot a blistering 80% from the field in the first and led 19-8 at the end of 1.  The offense and defense in the 2nd quarter was almost an exact replica of the first quarter highlighted by two key charges on the defensive end.  Also paying dividends throughout the first half was the rebound margin as Marquette tallied 18 boards compared to the opponent’s 11.  This effort helped the Mustangs take a nice 38-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.

If anyone knows that a 22-point lead isn’t safe, it should be Marquette.  The message was clear at halftime…win the 3rd quarter.  That’s exactly what the Mustangs did.  Even more assuring, though, was how they won the quarter.  Some excellent play both inside and out kept quality balance on the offensive end and limited the fast break opportunities for the Spartans.  The Mustangs reversed the basketball, attacked the basket, and shot 12 free-throws in the 3rd quarter, capitalizing on 9 of them.  At the end of 3, the lead increased to 59-29.  Marquette was able to get some nice efforts from some important reserves in the 4th quarter to help preserve the 68-42 win at the GAC Suburban Southwest Shootout.

The Mustangs will return to the court next at Meramec Community College on Friday, December 27th, against an excellent opponent in St. Charles West.  Game time is set for 5:30.
