4th Quarter Collapse Dooms Marquette
December 19, 2013Marquette Mustang Basketball
Today’s Consolation Championship of the Webster Groves Classic found Marquette facing a very quality opponent in St. Louis University High School. For three quarters, the Mustangs played excellent basketball as no team led by more than a point at the end of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd quarters. But a disappointing 4th quarter kept the Mustangs from pulling out the victory, and SLUH turned a close game into a blowout, winning the contest 55-36.
The first quarter started slow for Marquette, and after only a few minutes and some nice shooting from the adversary, SLUH claimed an early 12-2 lead just 4 minutes into the game. But some nice shooting, excellent ball movement, and fundamental defense helped the Mustangs claim a nice run of their own (13-2 over the final 4 minutes of the quarter), and the Mustangs held the lead after 1 quarter 15-14. The second quarter was filled with back-and-forth action as neither team claimed more than a 3-point advantage the entire period. The Jr. Bills outscored the Mustangs 12-10 in the quarter and found themselves on top at the half, 26-25.
The beginning of the third quarter was good to the Mustangs as they scored on their first two possessions and claimed the lead back only to have it taken from them a minute later. Given the fact the Mustangs only shot 1 free-throw in the first three quarters, Marquette still only found themselves down 1 at the end of the third. That was as close as Marquette would come the rest of the way.
The 4th quarter belonged to SLUH as they picked up the defensive pressure and forced 9 Marquette turnovers. The result of the 9 turnovers: the Mustangs could only get up 6 shots at the basket during the quarter and capitalize on only 1. Although the final score was not indicative of the way the Mustangs played, SLUH still turned a 1-point lead into a 19-point victory to claim the consolation championship of the Webster Classic.
The Mustangs return to action on Thursday night at Family Arena in the Suburban/GAC Shootout vs. Francis Howell Central. Game time is set for 7:00.
