Mustangs Escape with Win Over Hazelwood West

December 15, 2013
Marquette Mustang Basketball

The Mustangs entered Friday night’s consolation semifinal matchup with Hazelwood West with a chance to build on their 2nd half performance against Maplewood.  To do this, Marquette needed to start the game ready to play from the tip.  It’s a good thing that happened as the team with the 2nd half comeback, this time, was not wearing “Mustangs” across their chest.

The first quarter proved a solid offensive and defensive quarter for Marquette.  Two early 3s and 3 assists on their first 3 possessions helped the Mustangs claim an early 8-0 3 minutes into the game.  But some cold shooting against Hazelwood West zone and a lack of attacking the basket in the first quarter kept the Mustangs from another field goal, and after a lone free-throw, the Marquette held a 9-4 advantage after 1 period of play.

The 2nd quarter started well for the Mustangs as they climbed to a 15-point lead.  Some key play by some key reserves kept the pressure on Hazelwood West.  But towards the end of the 2nd quarter, the turnovers began to mount and Marquette turned the ball over 4 times in their last 5 possessions and only held a 21-12 lead at halftime.

The 2nd half was a test for Marquette.  In every game at the half so far this year, the Mustangs had to fight and claw to make it a game.  Now, the test was to see if the Mustangs could build on a first half lead.  But cold shooting again (2-12 from the field, 0-5 from behind the arc) and 6 turnovers helped keep the Spartans within striking distance as the Mustangs held on to a 9 point lead at 29-20.

The 4th quarter was chaotic.  An overabundant amount of turnovers (9) lead to easy baskets for Hazelwood West.  However, Marquette’s decent FT shooting (12-18) and a HUGE charge at the end of the game helped Marquette claim the victory 47-43.

The Mustangs are back in action Saturday at 1:30 against SLUH for the Consolation Championship against SLUH at the Webster Classic.
