Mustangs Fall to Maplewood
For the second game in a row, the Mustangs came out to a slow start and found themselves down big in the first half only to mount another comeback bid. This bid fell short, however, as the Mustangs fell to Maplewood by a score of 61-57.
It didn’t look good early for the Mustangs in the first quarter as numerous turnovers (9 in the first 14 possessions) and only 2 made field goals helped Maplewood climb to an early advantage. By the end of the first quarter, Maplewood held a 12-4 lead. The second quarter was more of the same, but a very poor effort on the defensive end of the floor helped Maplewood score 25 points in the quarter and increase their lead to 17 points at the half, 37-20. As a result of poor offensive execution due mainly to the 14 total turnovers in the first half and horrendous ball movement (0 1st half assists), Marquette only managed 3 made field goals at the intermission. The lone bright spot was a 13-17 performance at the FT line.
But Marquette did not quit and began showing similar resiliency as they did against Troy in the first game of the season. The Mustangs lowered their turnovers to only 1 in the 3rd quarter and began to cut away at the lead again. A quarter that saw 5 assists and 7 field goals helped the Mustangs trim the lead to 11 at 45-34. The start of the 4th quarter saw two huge three point field goals and similar ball movement. With just over two minutes to go in the contest, Marquette pulled to within 1, trailing Maplewood 47-46. But Maplewood was able to knock down a few FTs late and Marquette just couldn’t close the gap completely. Marquette’s effort came up short as Maplewood left with the 61-57 first round victory.
The Mustangs will need to have a short memory as they play another quality athletic opponent on the consolation side of the bracket against Hazelwood West at 5:30 on Friday at the Webster Tournament.
