Marquette Victorious at Fox
February 23, 2013Marquette Mustang Basketball
Coming off two days of no school amidst freezing rain, sleet and snow the Mustangs were anything but cold early on in their contest at Fox, raining down eight three-pointers in the first half to gain a 63-37 win against the home-standing Warriors.
Dillon Jones set the tone early. The senior guard drained a long wing trey off a kick-out from a double-teamed Matt Hink in the post. Tanner Stabenow followed that three with one of his own moments later. After a lull of possessions which saw the Mustangs score a lone point in seven trips and lead it only 7-6, Hink scored followed by a pull-up jumper by Jones and Chris Lenzen nailed his first three of the game quickly trailed by another Jones three. After Jones last bucket, the Mustangs led it 17-8 after a period.
After another six-possession run of only a traditional Hink three-point play to open play in the second quarter, Marquette led it by only a 20-12 count. Essentially though, the game was put away down the last 5:00 stretch of the half. Jones drained three MORE three-pointers on his way to 17 first-half points and along with Lenzen’s second three the Mustangs were able to stretch out the lead to 35-15 heading into the locker room at the half on the strength of a remarkable EIGHT three-pointers in the first 16:00 of play.
While the torrid stretch of outside shooting would quiet down in the second half (MHS would hit on only one more three-a Stabenow wing jumper in the third), their steady play would continue. Jones drove the lane in the opening minute of the third and was quickly followed by a nifty Brooks Gerrity baseline drive and six-footer. Along with Tanner’s long bomb, Marquette would hit their final three shots of the quarter including a John Conlon drive and runner from the free throw line and along with 7/8 free throw shooting during the period would lead it 53-26 heading into the final period.
The Mustang bench took over in the fourth and played solid basketball. Sam Ploeger hit a long baseline jumper off a great feed from Justin Wojtowicz (Justin would star in the fourth, most specifically on an ultra-hustle play which saw him knock the ball loose from two different Fox players, a dive on the floor and a dish to a Mustang squad which took it the other way for a Max Sidney lay-in). Conlon again converted in the paint and Max Sidney would shoot 3/3 in the last period to wrap up the 26-point road win.
The Mustangs win finally play their Senior Night game which had been postponed due to the recent storm tomorrow, February 23 in a varsity-only contest tipping off at 5:30 versus Oakville to wrap up the regular season.
