Big Second Half Carries Mustangs to Win at Mehlville
February 16, 2013Marquette Mustang Basketball
After playing a first half that could be kindly described as tedious, Marquette was able to move the game in the direction that they needed to play it in the second half of tonight’s contest at Mehlville and gain a league victory by a count of 53-23.
Chris Lenzen was the offense early on for Marquette. The 6-2 senior twice early on drove the left baseline and was fouled. Chris nailed all four free throws to put his team up 4-0. Mehlville, working each possession in the quarter into double-digit pass counts was able to keep the tempo down and the score close and trailed their guests by a 6-4 tally at the end of the first.
With the score sitting at 6-4 after 14 total possessions in the game and only a lone Dillon Jones’ first quarter lay-in to account for the field goal total, Marquette began to make some offensive noise. In the final five possessions of the half, Matt Hink grabbed an offensive board and scored, Lenzen hit a three from the right point, Dillon Jones hit another three from the left wing and Hink wrapped up the flurry with a traditional three-point play. By the time the dust had settled from the late Mustang run, Marquette led it 17-10 heading to the locker room.
With the defense ratcheted up late in the first half, the Mustangs continued to apply pressure in the third quarter. Brooks Gerrity hit a long left-wing three-pointer to open up the second half and as the period progressed, the steal total for the Marquette defense began to grow. Those steals were leading to buckets as Hink again went for a three-point play and Jones hit on a pull-up jumper before consecutive treys by Dillon and Lenzen again. After a Jones steal and lay-in, Jack Matzen joined in the offensive fun for Marquette with a double-clutch 16-footer from the right wing for the sophomore’s first varsity field goal. A close game early, the lead now stood at 18 with a 35-17 Marquette advantage after three quarters.
After playing nearly the first 13 minutes of the game with no makes from beyond the arc, Marquette had found its range in the second half. The early-going of the final period was a case in point as Jones, Gerrity and Gerrity again nailed three more three-pointers in a row. By the time Max Sidney had converted off a Matzen assist and junior Justin Wojtowicz had driven the left baseline and laid it in, a fifth Suburban West victory was well in hand as Marquette closed out what would become a thirty-point victory.
A tough final week of the regular-season is just ahead for the Mustangs. They will begin that week on Tuesday, February 19 with a 7:00 home contest against a team they have split a pair of games with already in Webster Groves.
