Participating in the third annual GAC-Suburban Challenge, Marquette had split the first two meetings in the event (a loss to Holt two years ago and a win over Duchesne last year). The Mustangs moved their ledger to 2-1 tonight with a solid 59-46 win over a previously-undefeated Fort Zumwalt North squad.
The start was slow for both clubs in this one. The Mustangs got four good looks at the bucket in their first four trips but came up empty each time before Matt Hink got the Mustangs on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws (Matt would end up visiting the foul line 18 times on the evening due in large part to a record for regulation-time rebounds for a single game-22). Hink would tally a lay-in a minute later and by the time he had converted another free throw a game that was over 5:00 old was led by MHS at 7-2. The Mustang offense began to thaw at that point as senior Dillon Jones nailed a short jumper followed by a trey from the right wing, a Chris Lenzen three and a double-pump runner by Jones to end the quarter to put the gray-clad Mustangs up 15-7 at the break.
The Mustangs could not get it rolling with much more success in the second. A 3/11 shooting performance in the quarter was offset by some remarkable defense. Coming in to tonight’s contest, North was averaging over 72 points per game. At the half though, the potent Panther attack was sitting at 16 points and Marquette led it by 10 at 26-16 even though MHS had only hit on the aforementioned three shots (a late bucket by Lenzen and threes by Brooks Gerrity and Tanner Stabenow).
Zumwalt North began to show some offensive life in the third but each time they threatened to make a game of it, the Mustangs would answer. Three times in the third, North cut the lead to nine but each time, the junior guard Gerrity would answer with a three-pointer on his way to a game-high 20 points. In a period which would mark the most efficient for the Mustangs offensively, the squad would only turn the ball over three times and shoot almost 50% from the floor in keeping a 10-point lead at 40-30.
The tone in the fourth was set early as off great team ball-movement, Stabenow nailed a three on the left baseline and Dillon Jones was able to knife through the defense to extend the lead to 15 a minute into the quarter. The Mustangs would go to the free throw line 16 times overall in the final stanza to wrap up the 13-point win and a tally in the W column for the Suburban side of the Challenge ledger.
Finals week looms at Marquette as the Mustangs will be off until the final day of exams. The Kirkwood Pioneers come to the Marquette Athletic Complex for a 6pm tip-off on Friday, December 21.
