Mustangs Grind Out Home- and League-Opener Win
December 14, 2012Marquette Mustang Basketball
As has been documented in this portion of cyberspace many times over the years, life in the Suburban West Conference is not all puppy dogs and rainbows or in basketball vernacular…layups and wide-open shots. The axiom of tough, defensive basketball between familiar opponents in this league held true as Marquette was able to outlast Lindbergh 38-21.
After senior point guard Dillon Jones was fouled on an opening-possession jumper and nailed both free throws, Lindbergh answered with a bucket of their own to tie it at 2 before junior Brooks Gerrity hit his first of three treys on the evening to get the home crowd loud and put the Mustangs up 5-2. The Flyers pulled to within 5-4 before consecutive buckets by first Matt Hink and a couple of Gerrity conversions to close the quarter put the home squad up 11-6 at the quarter break.
Great ball movement by the Mustangs on their first crack at the second period resulted in another long three by Gerrity off a great swing pass from Hink. (Brooks would go on to put up a great stat line for the night with 19 points on 6/10 shooting, 8 rebounds and a couple of steals.) When Sam Ploeger hit an 18-footer from the left baseline, Lindbergh called timeout midway through the quarter trailing 16-6. A late jumper by Gerrity was enough to put the Mustangs up 18-9 at the break. While 18 points did not seem like much production for 16:00 of play, those tallies came on a grand total of 18 total POSSESSIONS for the half, a rate of efficiency any team would take at a point every trip down the floor.
The opening minutes of the third locked the game away for the Mustangs. A bucket by Hink was followed up by the third Gerrity three-pointer. After Hink got his own board off a miss and put it back, Chris Lenzen followed with a couple of free throws and all of a sudden, the home squad led it 26-11 midway through the third. A 29-13 lead was what the scoreboard showed at the end of the third. Several Mustangs saw minutes in the final stanza including the four healthy sophomore Mustangs seeing their first action of the season and fan-favorite senior John Conlon making his return appearance after missing two weeks with serious facial injuries suffered in a hustle play during practice.
The schedule this season for Marquette has been a tough one as is per usual for the program. That slate features yet another undefeated team this Friday night, December 14 as the Mustangs take on a 4-0 Fort Zumwalt squad at 7pm inside St. Charles Family Arena in the annual GAC-Suburban Challenge.
