On 10/07/2011 the JJ McClain Mustangs narrowly got past an extremely tough divisional opponent the Velma Jackson Fighting Falcons of Madison County. Both teams were riding high coming off big divisional wins on last Friday night. The two teams with no love lost for the other began their fierce contest after the Mustang Seniors that participate in football, football auxiliary personnel and band members were honored along with their parents for senior night at the stable. In the first quarter the mustangs drew first blood when #7 Verdel Alexander hit #10 Odel Williams on a short pass of 12 yards to take a quick 7 to 0 lead in the first. With 8:52 left in the second the Falcons looked to their star tailback #34 Michael Gordon who took it in from 16 yards out. The top interception guy in the state the Mustangs own #12 Eric Redmond snatched a Falcon pass back home 36 yards for a score. With only 39 seconds to go in the half #34 Gordon took the kickoff return back 75 yards for a score and to end the half with the mustangs with a slim 1 point lead 13 to 12. In the second half the mustangs tried several attempts to kick the ball away from Gordon but eventually were forced to kick it to him deep. Gordon again found the end zone where he went for 36 yards for his third score of the game. Gordon would gash the Mustangs defense twice more representing all the Falcon scoring force in the game. The mustangs showed courage and endurance where they put forth a strong rally in the forth. With 7:10 Sr. TE #20 Brandon Brown hauled in a 41 yd pass from Alexander and after shaking a few falcon defenders found the end zone. With the Mustangs rallying Alexander found #12 Eric Redmond on a 16 pass to bring the mustangs to being only one score away from the lead. Verdel Alexander commanded the Mustang offense to mount a drive that covered much of the field and Alexander calling his own number to take it across the goal line for a 4 yd score. Alexander talked on a two point conversion putting the Mustangs in the lead 33 to 30 with a little over a minute left. The fired up mustang defense stuffed the falcons on their first play from scrimmage. Showing that a long week of practice and film work pays off the Mustangs #44 Anthony Junior was able to come with an arid Falcon pass to close the deal for the Mustangs. The Mustangs improve to 2-0 in the division and 6-2 on the year while the Falcons fall to 1-1 in division play. The Mustangs will be in action next week at home for Homecoming 2011 where they will play host to the undefeated Cleveland Eastside Trojans.
