Watch the pep rally at http://www.ihigh.com/mustangpower/video_909304.html Watch a clip of the game at: http://www.ihigh.com/mustangpower/video_909300.html Full Stats at: http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/mcclain-mustangs-(lexington,ms)/football/stats_by_game.htm On August 17, 2012 the Mighty Mustangs of JJ McClain High School took on the Durant High School Tigers. Both teams are extremely young and have lost several players to graduation and have several faces appearing on the college football level. McClain high school was especially hit hard from graduation loosing 16 seniors and only returning 2 starters on offense and 3 on defense. During the early on both teams struggle to find its way on offense against the stiff defense of their opponents. At the end of the first quarter both teams were dead locked at 0 to 0. A 30 minute weather delay allowed each team to take a bit more time to make further adjustments to their game plans. The Tigers started to go to their big tight end Sedric Commons against the much smaller defensive backs of the Mustangs. But despite a few big plays by Commons the Mustang defense held and the score at the half was still deadlocked at 0 to 0. The first offensive play of the second half by the Durant Tigers hit pay dirt after #2 broke a 54 yard dive play straight up the middle. The try for two was good. From that point on the Mustangs defense totally shut down Commons and the Tiger offense. The Mustangs came back with some better offensive play of their own but were plagued by penalties that brought a score back. The Mustangs first scored by a short run by Sr. running back #33 Timothy Stewart. Try for two was no good and the gap was tightened to 8 to 6. With 4:04 to go in the 3rd the mustang’s quarterback #10 Sr. Rotavious Thurmond snuck in from 4 yds. out for the go ahead score. Timothy Stewart added another score with 1:44 left in the 4th to secure the first win of the season for the young Mustangs. Qb Rotavious Thurmond led the Mustangs on the ground with 93 total rushing yards followed by Stewart with 90 total rushing yards. The defense was led by Stewart with 13 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery & 1 fumble caused. Followed by fellow Sr. #72 Adrine Howard with 10 tackles and 1 forced fumble. The mustangs will go back to practice to work on all the mistakes that occurred during Friday night’s game. The Mustangs will next be in action on 8/24/2012 at JZ George High School. Game time 7:30 pm
