Mustangs Take Two at Bluegrass Games
July 27, 2014Bishop Brossart High School
The Mustangs traveled to Lexington over the weekend to get some touches against teams they normally don’t play from around the state. The Mustangs newest senior class, 10 in all took the field against North Hardin. This new crop took over right where last year’s group left off. They scored early and had a convincing 4-0 win. The first goal of the game came 41 seconds in when Senior, Jacob Frommeyer caught the keeper sleeping and out of position as he took a shot from just inside the halfway line that bounced over the head of the keeper and into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead. The second goal of the game came in the 8th minute when the Mustangs got a corner kick. The corner was deflected and found the foot of Junior, Dylan Geiman who blasted the ball from just inside the 18 for the 2-0 lead. The Mustangs picked up their third goal when Senior, Gabe Roberts placed a great cross right to his fellow Senior, Nick Dierig who found the net for the 3-0 lead, which the Mustangs took to the half. The Mustangs put the nail in the coffin in the 61st frame when Sophomore, Cody Chisim sent a great ball to Jacob Frommeyer who took a left footed volley that sailed past the keeper for his second goal of the day.
The Mustang’s Defense looked good as Jeff Paulin got his first shutout of the season. Defender and Senior, Mark Goller looked big and strong as he hit the weight room since last season. Senior, Dalton Linebach also played well coming back after a year off. Jacob Frommeyer, the Junior not to be confused with the other Jacob Frommeyer looked solid as well on defense.
The Mustangs picked up their second win of the day in a 1-0 contest against West Jessimine Colts. Last season the Colts made it to the Kentucky Sweet Sixteen, but lost to the Highland Bluebirds in the first round. The Mustangs going against a strong wind had many opportunities in the first half, but couldn’t capitalize and the game was tied 0-0 at the half. The Mustangs would get the game winner in the 55th minute when Jacob Frommeyer sent a great corner to Mark Goller who headed it into the net for the 1-0 lead. The Mustangs defense held off the Colts in the final 15 minutes for the 1-0 win.
Jeff Paulin looked strong in the net for a second straight game getting his 2nd shutout in the preseason. Mark Goller, Jacob Frommeyer and Dalton Linebach shut down the Colts to help secure the victory. Many Mustang players got in the games and without a roster not sure who all contributed. Coach Goller and staff did a lot of substituting during both games.
The Mustangs vs State Champs Dunbar was cancelled due to Thunderstorms. Hopefully the Mustangs will get payback on their road to the State Championship later this year.
The Mustangs next preseason match will be August 7th when they travel to Ohio to take on former Mustang, Tony Ripberger’s Madeira Mustangs squad.
