The Cincinnati Enquirer's Prep Spring All-Stars were named and the Bishop Brossart boys track team has a solid showing as 3 individuals and a relay team were recognized.
Drew Berkemeyer, Michael Caldwell, Frank Cetrulo and the 4x800 meter relay team made the 2014 Northern Kentucky boys track & field all-star team. Berkemeyer and Caldwell join Villa Madonna's Eric Baugh as the only Class A athletes that received a 1st or 2nd team honor in 2 individual events.
The 4x800 team of Michael Caldwell, Cody Chism, Chris Loos and Ronny Smith won the Class A state title with a time of 8:17.17. The 4x800 also won the regional championship with Adam Hartig filling in for Caldwell. This was Brossart's 2nd straight event championship and their 3rd title in the last 4 years.
Drew Berkemeyer claimed Brossart's only 1st team honor in the long jump. Berkemeyer's 4th place jump of 20-5.75 was the best distance and place of any long jumper from NKY at the state meet. Drew also received 2nd team honors in the triple jump, having the 2nd farthest triple jump in NKY this year at 42-3. A standout in the hurdles as well, Drew scored 53 post-season points this year.
Michael Caldwell earned 2nd team honors in the 800 and 1600 meter runs. Michael finished 2nd in both events while battling a severe foot injury. Caldwell was also a member of the state champion 4x800 relay team and the 5th place 4x400 relay team. Caldwell finished 1st or 2nd in every 800, 1600, and 3200 meter race this season, except at one of the nation's best high school track meets, the Eastern Relays.
In his 1st season pole vaulting, Frank Cetrulo earned a 2nd team spot, joining a few of his regional rivals for that honor. Frank cleared a personal best 11 feet at the state meet, placing him 7th. He became Brossart's first pole vaulter to score at the state meet since 2011 and helped Brossart secure a regional title and 3rd place team title at state. Frank is one of the youngest members of the all-star team.
Class A, Region 4 was well represented on the all-star team. Eric Baugh was named the boys track and field athlete of the year in NKY. Pole vaulters Dylan Withers of Lloyd, Nick Hardt of Newport Catholic and Nick Staub of St. Henry joined Cetrulo on the 2nd team. Newport's Jashawn Stanley made the 1st team in the 110 hurdles, while discus thrower Dom Joseph and 300 hurdler Jacob Brett made the 2nd team. Lloyd's thrower Michael Slusher made the 2nd team in shot put. Walton Verona's 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams received 1st team honors. Also, WV's Clark Crook and Scott Smith made the 2nd team in long jump.
The Enquirer's Richard Skinner puts the all-star team together with input from local coaches, officials, other journalist and results from the regional and state meet. He also puts the girls track and field, baseball, softball, boys and girls tennis all-star teams together.
