Boys Win Diocese of Covington Track Championships
April 30, 2014By Chris Davis of Bishop Brossart High School
The Boys track team was in action yesterday trying to squeeze in the Diocese meet before the storm settled in. As in baseball when you want to be winning after the 5th inning, as the skies darkened it was evident that the Mustangs needed to be the point leader before lighting struck.
The team mixed up a few line-ups and focused on some new events in order to pull of the Championship. It was clear from the 1st race of the day that St. Henry meant business as they won the 4x800. But the boys kept grinding away and once again Gabe Roberts was racking up the points in the field events, only lightning stopped his quest for the Triple Crown, of Long-Triple-High Jump gold medals.
On the track with Michael Caldwell bothered by a calf cramp, seniors Drew Berkemeyer and Dutch Graus started the momentum swing as we won the 400 and 300 hurdles in back to back events.
Other solid performers were Joe Donnelly in the 200, Daniel Vogel in the 400, and Chase Britt in the Shot Put.
Although the meet was cancelled with 4 events still needing to be scored, the team is confident that with high jump, pole vault, the 3200 and the 4x4; they would have at worst maintained their distance on 2nd place CCH. When lightning struck it was BBHS 141 and CCH 125.
Hopefully this momentum will carry over into the remainder of the season. The team will do a victory lap around the school today as they were prevented from celebrating last night.
