Boys and Girls late rally falls just short at the Lloyd Gold Medal Meet
March 21, 2014By Chris Davis of Bishop Brossart High School
The Lloyd Gold Medal Meet is a very unique invitational and one that the Mustangs are used to a lot of success. The past two seasons the boys team took care of business and this year seemed like it would be no different. Unfortunately due to the nature of the meet the Mustangs had several 1st place performances that were nearly cancelled out by Dixie Heights 2nd place scores.
The Mustangs could not capitalize on Dixie's disqualification in the 4x200, as they were disqualified as well for failing to make the exchange within the zone. As the meet wore on the team fought valiantly to gain back the hole they had dug themselves. Nick Schuler ran his best time ever in the 2 mile as he won his first ever varsity race. As they went into the 4x4 the team knew a 1st place, and a Dixie 3rd would have given them the team title...but Dixie knew the same thing. The team of Vogel, Graus, Goller and Caldwell did what they had to do winning the 4x4 in a Single A state best 3:38 seconds. But Dixie rose to the occassion finishing 2nd well ahead of 3rd place victory.
Overall it was a great day with several personal records set including, Robby Twehues in the Discus, Chase Britt in the Shot Put, Drew Berkemeyer continued to lead the way in the field events. Michael Caldwell also broke the 1600 record which had been set in the 1980's! Caldwell blitz the competition with a 4:22.5 performance!
The team will continue to work hard, work on correcting mistakes, and regroup for next Saturday's Clash of the Classes meet at Walton Verona.
On the Girls side, the girls team continues to impress with small numbers. The team was just 4 points behind NCC. The team had strong performances from Suzi Brown, and Kendall Schuler among others. They will also be competing at the Walton meet on the 29th.
