Boys win the Conner Cougar Invitational
March 17, 2014By Chris Davis of Bishop Brossart High School
The Bishop Brossart Boys' track team successfully carried the momentum they gained from the indoor season to the first outdoor meet of the year. The Mustangs edged out large school Ryle 86-84.
The meet came down to the 4x400 meter relay needing to win the race and earn 10 points. The squad of Vogel, Dutch, Loos and Caldwell ran a 3:40.2 mile, holding off Covington Catholic by 2 seconds earning the team championship.
Drew Berkemeyer led the way for the Mustangs with 31 individual points, Michael Caldwell also had 2 individual victories, including a 4:24.7 in the 1600 meter run, just 1 second away from the school record. Coming off of an injury Mark Goller jumped 5'10, his best ever, to gain a second place finish in the high jump. And the versatile Joe Donnelly gained much needed points in the 200 meter dash.
Along with beating Ryle, Brossart also took down Covington Catholic and St. Henry in the process. The boys will now focus their attention on a practice meet with Walton on Tuesday, and on defending their Lloyd Gold Medal Meet title for a 3rd straight year this Thursday in Erlanger.
The girls team also had a great day, taking home a runner up trophy. The team was short handed due to injuries and illness but were still able to overcome the odds and defeat 8 other schools. Kendall Schuler led the way with a victory in the 2 mile and 2 mile relay.
