At a New Venue, the Track and Field Mustangs will look for a Similar Result
March 6, 2014By Chris Davis of Bishop Brossart High School
Since the late 1990’s the Bishop Brossart Boys Track and Field team has been a mainstay at the Mason Dixon Games. They have won several Mason Dixon State Titles at the wooden track at the Kentucky Fairgrounds, the most recent back in 2011. Last year the team was edged out by champion St. Henry and finished runner-up to the Crusaders.
Due to track maintenance at the original wooden track, the site of this year’s indoor state-championships has been moved to Mason County’s indoor facility. This is a site the team is very familiar with and has won both meets they have attended this year there. The Mustangs will look to duplicate this success and bring home the indoor state title.
A clear difference between last year’s squad and this year’s is the fact that the Winter Warriors are deep in many events. They will look to score two athletes in just about every jump, throw, and race on Saturday. This depth on paper has them as the clear favorite, but last year’s 3rd place outdoor state team, Green County, will have plans to knock off the Mustangs.
Seniors Michael Caldwell, Drew Berkemeyer, Dutch Graus, and Drew Miller, will be leading the team on Saturday, with hopes that by 2pm the state championship will be there’s. Coach Davis hopes that this end of the indoor season will catapult the team to future outdoor success. With a great mix of senior leadership and fresh faces the Mustangs will be poised to have once again another impressive Track and Field season.
